MISSION VIEJO – – Capistrano Valley Christian used a 16-point second quarter to surge ahead and collect a 36-20 victory over Fairmont Prep in a San Joaquin League game Thursday night at Capistrano Valley High.

The Eagles (2-5, 1-1) were led by the playmaking trio of Dawson Piper, Daniel Herber and Ryan Rapattoni.

Rapattoni had a team-high 125 receiving yards, one touchdown and made an interception on defense while Herber ran for 88 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns.

Piper threw for 165 yards and one score.

The opening quarter featured lengthy drives from both teams but resulted in a scoreless period as neither squad could successfully end a possession with points.

The first points of the game came early in the second quarter. After a Piper punt pinned Fairmont Prep (2-5, 0-2) inside the 5-yard line, the Huskies misplayed a handoff and Michael Chatman fell on the loose ball where he was ruled down for a safety.

The ensuing return set up the Eagles with great field position, and they took advantage of the short field when Herber scored his first touchdown of the contest.

CVC added another score just before halftime as Piper and Rapattoni connected for a 50-yard touchdown pass.

Huskies put together a 78-yard drive to get their first score, with the big play coming from a 54- yard pass to Daniel Chatman that made the score 16-6 after a failed two-point try

Fairmont used their thunder and lightning running attack of Kiki Mendoza and Michael Chatman to soften up the Eagles defense, but turnovers and penalties halted and threat of a comeback.

Mendoza’s TD with four minutes left in the third made it 22-13 but the Huskies would get no closer.

Daniel Chatman finished with 173 receiving yards and one score.
