CROSS COUNTRY

Shortly after the Dana Hills boys produced the fourth-fastest time ever at the CIF State Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning, longtime Dolphins coach Tim Butler announced that this will be his final year as head coach.

Butler called it “a gift” to be able to close out his career with the quickest team he has ever put on a race course.

“What coach wouldn’t want to go out like this?” he said. “This is the best team that I’ve ever had with broken course records on all three major courses that they run. It has really been a gift and a joy to be there.”

Butler, who has headed the team for 43 years, plans to remain involved with the program.

Dana Hills’ boys team will compete in the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Ore., on Saturday. Brea Olinda’s Austin Tamagno will compete as an individual. …

The Foot Locker West Regionals will be held at Mt. SAC on Saturday. The top 10 boys and girls in the seeded races of each of the four regional meets advance to the Foot Locker National Finals in San Diego on Dec. 12.

Tesoro’s Amanda Gehrich, Capistrano Valley’s Ashley Licata, and the Canyon duo of Nikki Zielinski and Sara Leonard headline the county girls in the West Regionals field. Canyon senior Dylan Scarsone will be joined by teammates Travis Gradijan and Jason Ware in the boys meet.
