ANAHEIM – Jeremiah Thompson rushed for three touchdowns and Alex Ashcraft threw for two more as Cypress rallied for a 40-20 nonleague victory over Santa Monica on Friday night at Western High.

Thompson came through with 126 yards on 18 carries for the Centurions (2-0), while Ashcraft completed 15 of 21 passes for 173 yards. Cypress trailed at halftime, 13-12, and again in the third quarter, 20-19, before posting 21 consecutive points.

Santa Monica (0-2), which failed to scored in its opener last week against Segerstrom, needed just 64 seconds to take a 7-0 lead. Darrush Sayson connected with Andrew Amaya on a 53-yard shovel pass to put Santa Monica ahead.

Thompson and the Centurions answered with with a 1-yard scoring run midway through the first quarter.

Tony Dancy upped the Viking lead to 13-6 with three minutes remaining in the opening period when he scored on a 3-yard run.

The next Cypress drive, with Ashcraft completing a apir of first-down passes deep in Viking territory, hit Noah Zuzuarrgui on a 2-yard toss in the end zone.

Cypress briefly grabbed the lead, 19-13, on a 19-yard Thompson TD run with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Sayson followed with throws of 53 and 25 yards to set up Dancy’s 13-yard touchdown run with eight minutes left in the quarter.

Dominique Thompson, who caught 10 passes for 117 yards, tallied what proved to be Cypress’ winning points on an 11-yard reception with 3::50 remaining in the period.

Jeremiah Thompson added a 3-yard scoring run and Kaleb Craig a scoring run of 14 yards late in the game.

Cypress finished with 373 yards in offense.

Sayson threw for 213 yards and added 118 yards on 12 carries.
