Two Orange County top-5 boys basketball teams will play each other in a CIF Southern California Regionals second-round games Saturday.

Los Alamitos and Santa Margarita won their first-round games in Division II on Wednesday. Los Alamitos, No. 2 in the final county poll, will be home against No. 4 Santa Margarita for Saturday’s 6 p.m. game.

Los Alamitos is the home team because it the higher-seeded team, at No. 3 while Santa Margarita is seeded sixth.

Los Alamitos and Santa Margarita did not play each other during the regular season or in the CIF-Southern Section Open Division playoffs. They have a couple of common opponents, including Orange Lutheran. Los Alamitos, in the Orange County North/South Challenge in December, defeated Orange Lutheran which beat Santa Margarita twice in Trinity League games.

In Wednesday’s Division II first round, Los Alamitos beat Poway, 67-58. Santa Margarita beat Mission Bay of San Diego, 73-58.

Also in Division II, Orange Lutheran rallied in the final moments of the fourth quarter to beat Army-Navy of Carlsbad, 63-62. Orange Lutheran plays at Washington Prep of Los Angeles on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Edison lost to Kearny of San Diego, 65-58, in Division III. Edison was seeded No. 2, Kearny No. 15.

That was not the only game in which a much-lower seeded team beat a much-higher seeded team Wednesday.

In Division I, No. 13-seeded Roosevelt beat Fairfax, 56-55, in double overtime. In Division II, No. 16 Temecula Valley beat top-seeded Taft and No. 15 El Camono Real defeated No. 2 Cantwell Sacred Heart.

In Division V, one San Joaquin League team advanced and another was eliminated. Saddleback Valley Christian defeated Mission Vista of Oceanside, 53-52. Capistrano Valley Christian lost to Bonita Vista of Chula Vista, 59-46.

Saddleback Valley Christian will play at top-seeded St. Joseph of Santa Maria in the second round Saturday at 6 p.m.

All Saturday games are scheduled for 6 p.m.

The CIF Southern California Regionals Open Division first round is Friday. Mater Dei is home at 7 p.m. against Foothills Christian of El Cajon, which Mater Dei defeated at the Nike Extravaganza last month.

Mater Dei’s last game was a 102-54 loss to Chino Hills in the CIF-Southern Section Open Division playoffs. It will be interesting to see the enthusiasm and confidence levels at which Mater Dei plays Friday.
