Mater Dei junior Katie Lou Samuelson committed to national champion Connecticut on Monday.

Samuelson, the Register’s girls basketball player of the year the last two seasons, visited UConn this spring and “loved it,” Monarchs coach Kevin Kiernan said in an email.

Samuelson averaged 26.3 points per game and shot 62 percent from the field in leading Mater Dei to a 25-3 record in 2013-14. She won the Gatorade State Player of the Year award.

In early April, Samuelson said she had her decision narrowed down to UConn, Stanford, Notre Dame, UCLA and Kentucky. She chose a Huskies program that won its ninth national championship this season, finishing with a 40-0 record.

Samuelson’s older sisters Bonnie and Karlie both play at Stanford.

UConn currently has another Mater Dei alumna in Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, who just finished her junior year.
