SANTA ANA – Saddleback found itself trailing winless Godinez by three touchdowns at halftime Friday night, but the Roadrunners never lost sight of the game.
Saddleback rushed for 208 yards and scored six consecutive second-half touchdowns to rally past Godinez, 37-21, on Friday night in an Orange Coast League opener at Segerstrom High.
“They were angry at halftime,” Saddleback coach Rob Thompson said about his players and what fueled their spirit. “I told the guys relax, calm down.”
Senior running back Bryan Salcido ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns and caught nine passes for 126 yards and a score to pace Saddleback (3-3, 1-0). He also threw a 29-yard touchdown pass.
Trailing, 21-14, in the fourth quarter, Salcido connected with senior Emilio Garcia for a touchdown pass that tied the score.
Not long after that, senior Antonio Davalos blocked a Godinez punt and recovered the ball at the Grizzlies’ 15-yard line.
Saddleback’s rushing attack wore down Godinez (0-6, 0-1) and the Roadrunners followed the blocked punt with two more touchdowns.
Senior quarterback Johnny Rojas completed 11 of 24 passes for 151 yards for Saddleback.
