Blanke's kick boosts Katella

Special to OCVarsity.com
ANAHEIM – Katella kicker Bryan Blanke kept it simple Friday, and his 42-yard field goal with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave the Knights a 29-28 nonleague victory over Anaheim at Glover Stadium.

“I was nervous, but I remembered my practice routine: Take deep breaths, focus on the ball and keep my head up,” he said.

Blanke’s kick capped a six-play, 66-yard drive set up by Cody Orosco’s interception.

The teams traded touchdowns during a 68-second span in the first quarter. A Nik Bush touchdown run gave Katella (1-1) a 20-14 lead, but Blanke’s missed extra point allowed Anaheim (1-1) to gain a 21-20 halftime advantage on a keeper by Reyna.

The Colonists added a Mike Reyes touchdown run in the third quarter, but Dexter Carter’s scoring run and a failed two-point conversion narrowed Katella’s deficit to 28-26 with 9:36 left in the game.
