THURSDAY’S O.C. ROUNDUP

GAME OF THE DAY

ROSARY 2, SOUTH HILLS 1

Amelia Wiercioch and her Rosary teammates are likely to win a lot of games this season, but there might not be many wins that top what they did Thursday.

At least not in terms of excitement – and significance.

The Duke-bound Wiercioch escaped from a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, striking out South Hills’ cleanup hitter, to secure a 2-1 nonleague victory for the Royals at Fullerton College.

South Hills (0-1) is the top-ranked team in the San Gabriel Valley.

Rosary improved to 5-0 and is ranked No. 9 in the Register’s season-opening poll.

Wiercioch was matched against Florida-bound junior Natalie Lugo. Both pitchers allowed five hits, Lugo had more strikeouts (7-6), but Wiercioch (5-0) didn’t allow any earned runs.

Rosary scored with two runs with two outs in the fifth inning. Nicole Siess walked, stole second and scored on a bloop double by Katelyn Christensen. Andi Hester followed with a single to drive in Siess and give Rosary a 2-0 lead.

South Hills scored in the sixth and loaded the bases in the seventh, but Wiercioch ended the game with a strikeout.
