Smith's late goal lifts patient Tesoro to win over Edison
Luck is a funny thing. There are strings of good an strings of bad, but it usually evens out in the end.
For the Tesoro girls soccer team, it seemed to take a turn for the good Thursday.
Skylar Smith found the ball in a crowd and scored with just six minutes remaining as Tesoro knocked off Sunset League champion Edison, 1-0, in a CIF-SS Division 1 first-round playoff game at Edison High.
“It was an intense game, also an emotional game,” Smith said. “What we learned from last year is you’re going to need luck. This season we haven’t had that much luck. I think hopefully this year will be our year.”
Tesoro (19-7-2) was the Division 1 and Southern California Regional runner-up last season and beat Edison on the way to the division final.
“That (experience) helped the team settle down,” Tesoro coach George Deverrick said. “They never really panicked. Never really resorted to playing it long.
“We did a great job of playing the ball and keeping calm.”
The Titans will play at Mater Dei in the second round Tuesday. Mater Dei beat Cypress, 3-0, in the first round.
Edison (11-8-4) had an early push and kept things even in the first half. Tesoro had the better run of play in the second half and got the bounce it needed to end the Chargers’ postseason early.
“That’s hard to swallow,” Edison coach Kerry Crooks said. “This division is super hard. We knew when we got the draw that Tesoro is a great team. Wasn’t an easy draw.”
Edison won the Sunset League with four overtime victories, including two against No. 3 Los Alamitos, but couldn’t find its late magic again.
“We had a lot to be proud of,” Crooks said. “Our league was killer. It took a lot of emotional energy to get through our league.”
