Tesoro’s Gordon Neale finished second in the Junior PGA Championship in Bryan, Texas, shooting a 4-under-par 67 in the final round Friday.

Neale finished two shots behind Sam Burns of Shreveport, La., who took the lead with a 65 in the completion of the suspended third round and closed with a 71. Burns finished at 10-under 274.

Neale, who is going into his senior year, posted two rounds in the 60s during the 72-hole tournament at Miramont Country Club, including a 7-under 64 in the second round to post an 8-under 276.

Kristen Gillman of Austin, Texas, won the girls division, and Bethany Wu of Diamond Bar finished second.

Gillman, Burns, Wu and Neale secured spots on the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team that will face Europe in Sept.22-23 in Scotland. …

Corona del Mar incoming junior Amy Matsuoka birdied two holes on the front nine on her way to carding a 3-over-par 75 in the final round to repeat as the winner of the Lockton / Samsung Kansas City Junior at The National Golf Club of Kansas City on Thursday.

She is the only player to win the AJGA tournament in Parkville, Mo., twice.

Matsuoka led the 54-hole event from the start, opening with a 1-under 71 and adding a 2-under 70 in the second round to post an even-par 216 and win by four strokes. …

Corona del Mar’s Alyaa Abdulghany finished third in the Bishop Gates Golf Academy Junior Classic in Oxnard. The sophomore-to-be carded a 4-under 68 in the first round at River Ridge Golf Club and added a 1-under 71 in the final round to finish the AJGA tournament with a 5-under 211, five shots off the winning score.

VOLLEYBALL: DeFALCO BATTLINGS IN PORTUGAL

T.J. DeFalco of Huntington Beach and U.S. teammate Louis Richard survived some early struggles to advance to the Round of 32 at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships at Porto, Portugal.

DeFalco/Richard finished third in their pool, but stayed alive Friday by defeating Poland’s Dominik Kmiecik/Jakub Macura, 21-18, 13-21, 15-13, in the first elimination round.

In today’s Round of 32, they will play Brazil’s No.1 team Arthur Lanci/George Wanderly.

Last year, DeFalco, 17, won the bronze medal with Lucas Yoder at the U19 World Championships.

“We had some trouble all over the court, playing different teams, different strategies of teams,” DeFalco said of the difficulties early in the tournament. “All these teams have been great and they have been teaching us lessons. And we are very grateful for that. That’s why we have been progressing throughout the tournament.”

Former Los Alamitos standout Crissy Jones and U.S. teammate Zana Muno of Notre Dame of Serhman Oaks advanced to the women’s round of 16 at the U19 World Championships in Porto.

The championship matches for the men and women are Sunday.


BASEBALL: FLYNN COMMITS TO ARIZONA 

Servite senior-to-be Michael Flynn committed to Arizona, the Trinity League school announced.

Last season, Flynn, a right-handed pitcher, went 1-1 with a 1.02 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 132/3 innings.

SWIMMING: MONJAY COMMITS TO USC

Northwood incoming senior swimmer Billy Monjay committed to USC, his father, Dick, said.

Monjay finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.17seconds) at the CIF Division 1 finals in May.

BASKETBALL: PFLUEGER LISTS TOP 5 COLLEGES

Mater Dei incoming senior guard Rex Pflueger trimmed his college choices to five potential schools.

In a Twitter post, Pflueger said the final five are (in no order): Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Cal, Washington State and San Diego State.

Pflueger averaged 12 points and five assists a game as a junior.
