CIF-SOUTHERN SECTION BASEBALL SEMIFINALS

DIVISION 1

NEWBURY PARK (18-6) VS. MATER DEI (24-5)

Site, time: Blair Field (Long Beach), 7 p.m.

Outlook: Newbury Park, the No. 2 team from the Marmonte League, beat Long Beach Wilson, 3-0, in the first round; El Toro, 2-0, in the second round; and Saugus, 7-3, in the quarterfinals. Newbury Park Panthers junior Colton Waltner is batting .351. Senior pitcher Luke Eubank is 10-0 with a 1.04 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 74 innings. Mater Dei is in a Division 1 semifinal for the third time in four seasons. Mater Dei senior pitcher/outfielder Ty Moore is batting .412 with 23 RBIs and has a 12-1 record. Third baseman Ryan McMahon has driven in 22 runs. Davis Tominaga (6-1) is scheduled to be the Monarchs starting pitcher against Newbury Park. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students with student identification and for children 13 and younger. Mater Dei is the home team.

DIVISION 2

ALISO NIGUEL (22-11) VS. TRABUCO HILLS (17-13)

Site, time: Trabuco Hills High, 3:15p.m.

Outlook: This is the fourth meeting of these Sea View League teams. Aliso Niguel won two of three games against Trabuco Hills in league play. The scores: 10-0, Aliso Niguel at Aliso Niguel; 10-7, Trabuco Hills at Trabuco Hills; and 3-2, Aliso Niguel at Aliso Niguel. Aliso Niguel finished second, behind Mission Viejo, in the Sea View League standings and Trabuco Hills finished third. In the playoffs, Aliso Niguel defeated Chino Hills, 3-1, in the first round; Tustin, 2-1, in the second round; and Valencia, 10-0, in the quarterfinals. Aliso senior Brett Baker is batting .386 and is 8-1 on the mound. Matt Molnar has driven in 16 runs. Trabuco Hills has playoff victories over Loyola of Los Angeles, 5-4, in the wild-card round; Dos Pueblos of Goleta, 3-2, in the first round; Redlands, 10-2, in the second round; and Glendora, 3-2, in the quarterfinals. Steven Garland of Trabuco was 7 for 8 over two games last week.

PACIFICA (27-5) VS. SOUTH HILLS OF WEST COVINA (20-7)

Site, time: South Hills High, 3:15 p.m.

Outlook: Pacifica finished first in the Empire League and was seeded second. In the playoffs, the Mariners defeated Redondo Union, 7-0, in the first round; Alta Loma, 4-0, in the second round; and Mission Viejo, 17-2, in the quarterfinals. Max Bethell is batting .372 and is 10-1 with a 1.56 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 73 innings. Kyle Davis is 9-1 with a 1.15 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 73 innings. South Hills won the Sierra League championship. The Huskies in the playoffs beat Upland, 4-0, in the first round; Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley, 8-1, in the second round; and Rancho Verde of Moreno Valley, 10-0, in the quarterfinals.

DIVISION 3

BECKMAN (22-7) VS. ALHAMBRA (22-3)

Site, time: Moor Field (Alhambra), 3:15 p.m.

Outlook: Beckman won the Division 3 championship last year. In these playoffs, the second-seeded Patriots defeated El Rancho of Pico Rivera, 1-0, in the first round; Colton, 3-0, in the second round; and Los Altos of Hacienda Heights, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. Beckman senior pitcher James Kaprielian has been his usual near-unhittable self in the playoffs. He threw two-hitters in the Beckman victories over El Rancho and Los Altos. For the season, he is 11-1 with a 0.72 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 731/3 innings. Connor Deneen will be the Patriots' starting pitcher against Alhambra. He shut out Colton in the second round last Tuesday. Third-seeded Alhambra won the Almont League championship. The Moors in the playoffs defeated Carter of Rialto, 6-0, in the first round; Whittier, 6-4, in the second round; and Lancaster, 4-2, in the quarterfinals. The Moors' Juan Crespo is batting .487 with 26 RBIs.

DIVISION 6

CAPISTRANO VALLEY CHRISTIAN (23-6) VS. ST. MARGARET'S (16-8)

Site, time: San Juan Sports Park

Outlook: St. Margaret's is the home team, but there is not much home-field advantage for the Tartans as both of these neighboring schools use San Juan Sports Park as their home field. In the playoffs, second-seeded Capistrano Valley Christian, champion of the San Joaquin League, defeated Chadwick of Palos Verdes Peninsula, 18-0, in the first round; Vasquez of Acton, 19-4, in the second round; and Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Parker Coss is batting .404 with a team-high 28 RBIs for the Eagles. Pitcher Sam Eichler is 9-2 with a 0.62 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 671/3 innings. St. Margaret's finished second in the Academy League, behind Oxford Academy. In the playoffs, the Tartans defeated St. Anthony of Long Beach, 4-3, in the first round; Windward of Los Angeles, 8-2, in the second round; and Viewpoint of Calabasas, 4-3, in the quarterfinals. Harrison White is batting .525 with 23 RBIs and has a 5-2 record on the mound. Chaz Williams is batting .339 and is 6-2 on the mound.
