GARDEN GROVE – Savanna scored two first-half touchdowns and then held off Santiago for a 14-10 victory in a nonleague game Friday at Garden Grove High.

The Rebels (3-2) took the lead for good at the beginning of the second quarter. Two minutes into the quarter, Rebels quarterback Ryley Smith handed off to running back Angel Roberts, who scored on a 14-yard run, giving them a 14-3 lead.

The Rebels then spent the rest of the game defending their lead.

“We tried to hold the ball and keep it away from the Cavaliers,” said Rebels coach Roger Whalen. “We just tried to play a better game.”

Santiago (1-4) wasn’t able to capitalize after gaining a first down at the Savanna 12. They fired three incomplete passes and missed a field goal.

The Cavaliers closed the gap in the fourth quarter. Cavaliers quarterback Angel Tajimaroa scored on a run to cut Savanna’s lead to 14-10.

The Rebels were able to hold off Santiago the rest of the way.

Santiago’s Dylan Ourng rushed for a game-high 102 yards, and teammate Dominick Smith gained 33 yards.
