SAN CLEMENTE – Brandon Reaves doesn’t search for the spotlight.

He doesn’t make a big scene or say things that might upset an oppenent. San Clemente coach Jaime Ortiz describes him as businesslike and humble.

Ask Reaves what he likes about playing football, he says simply, “Scoring touchdowns. Getting to hit people and getting hit. Trading paint. It’s fun.”

Searching for it or not, the spotlight has found the versatile senior, who has played a big role in the Tritons’ most succesful season in school history.

There isn’t much Reaves hasn’t done for this season for San Clemente, which takes on Edison Saturday night in the CIF State Regional finals. The Division 1-A game will be played at Huntington Beach High at 7:30 p.m.

Reaves, a senior, has run for 702 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has caught 64 passes for 740 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“Every time he touches the ball, you’re almost guaranteed a first down,” Ortiz said. “There’s not too many players I’ve been around that can do things like that. He’s a threat every time he touches the ball.”

Add in his touchdowns scored in other ways – kickoff, punt and interception returns – and Reaves has compiled 27 total touchdowns and 1,916 all-purpose yards.

“He’s a special player,” San Clemente quarterback Jack Sears said. “He can make plays out of nothing. The spotlight doesn’t get too bright for him. He’s electric.”

In the CIF-SS Division 2 championship, Reaves was held to 77 all-purpose yards, but he did score three touchdowns, two on short runs and the other with a catch.

“Not really frustrating,” Reaves said of the Tritons’ 45-35 victory over Murrieta Valley in the CIF-SS Division 2 final. “I still scored touchdowns, so that’s really good for me.”

At the end of the game, with the Tritons trying to wrap up their first CIF football title in the school’s 52-year history, it was Reaves who covered Murrieta Valley’s top receiver.

Marquis Spiker had caught nine passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns in the game for Murrieta Valley, but Reaves knocked down a fourth-down pass meant for Spiker, securing the victory.

“Going into the year, he wasn’t real excited about playing corner,” Ortiz said, “but he realizes, ‘hey, it’s my senior year. I’ve got to help the team.’ He’s had a great attitude and made the play when he had to against a very good receiver.”

Ortiz said Reaves has shown exceptional versatility and explosiveness throughout the season, but so far it has been a short list of colleges that has shown an interest in him.

“There are schools out there, but no one’s pulled the trigger,” Ortiz said. “I said it a couple different times: He’s the most under-recruited athlete in Southern California.”

Reaves has recevied an offer from Colorado State. Ortiz said he has been in contact with Fresno State and noted that New Mexico has looked at Reaves.

“I don’t know,” Reaves said. “I just keep playing. Hopefully something comes. It’s good to have a D1 offer.”

The college talk isn’t a distraction. Reaves made it clear this week that he is focused on playing Edison and, hopefully, advancing to the CIF State championship game.

It’s one more opportunity for Reaves to take San Clemente into the spotlight.
