FIRST TEAM

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Sammy Cordova

Edison

Junior

Pitcher

Highlights: Cordova, who has committed to Utah, put together one of the most dominant pitching performances in school history. She went 25-5 with a 0.88 ERA and 186 strikeouts in 192 innings. She recorded 14 shutouts, including three in the playoffs to lead the Chargers to the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals.

Kaley Winegarner

Pacifica

Freshman

Pitcher

Highlights: The Mariners played one of the toughest nonleague schedules in the nation and Winegarner proved herself against the best competition. She went 13-0 with three saves and she recorded nine shutouts. She had a 0.44 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 80 innings. Expect big things from Winegarner in the future.

Taylor McQuillin

Mission Viejo

Freshman

Pitcher

Highlights: McQuillin, who has committed to Oklahoma State, burst on the scene and established herself as one of the premier power pitchers in Southern California. McQuillin went 23-5 with a 0.80 ERA and 275 strikeouts in 183 innings. McQuillin helped lead the Diablos to a South Coast League championship.

Hayley Copeland

Esperanza

Sophomore

Pitcher

Highlights: Copeland ruled the Century League and helped the Aztecs reach the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals. Copeland gets incredible movement on her pitches, which is rare among pitchers. She went 16-4 with a 1.14 ERA and 214 strikeouts in 141 innings.

Jenavee Peres

Garden Grove

Sophomore

Catcher

Highlights: Peres, who has committed to San Diego State, is a dangerous power hitter and is one of the top defensive players in the area. Peres saved her best performances for the postseason, helping the Argos reach the CIF-SS Division 4 finals for the first time since 1990. Peres went 7 for 15 with four runs, six RBIs, two homers and three doubles in the playoffs. For the season, she hit .517 with seven doubles, 11 homers and 39 RBIs.

Lauren Young

Canyon

Senior

Infielder

Highlights: Young, who signed with Arizona, was a second-team selection as a junior and she moves up to the first team after another stellar season. Young is a fantastic offensive player, but she's an even better defensive player with one of the best arm's the county has seen. Young hit .394 with five homers, two triples, six doubles, 27 runs and 25 RBIs.

Alyssa Palomino

Mission Viejo

Freshman

Infielder

Highlights: Palomino, who already has committed to Arizona, is the total package. She hits for average and for power. She has crazy speed and she is an excellent defensive player. Palomino hit .489 with six doubles, two triples, seven homers, 32 runs, 23 RBIs and 19 stolen bases to help the Diablos with the South Coast League title.

Nicole DeWitt

Pacifica

Sophomore

Infielder

Highlights: DeWitt, who has committed to Florida, had one of the best offensive seasons during the regular season and that came against some of the best pitching in the nation, considering Pacifica's grueling schedule. She hit .488 with nine doubles, eight homers, 41 runs and 24 RBIs and she had nine stolen bases.

Maleena Esparza

La Habra

Senior

Infielder

Highlights: Esparza, who has signed with Northern Illinois, led the Highlanders to their second consecutive Freeway League title and the CIF-SS Division 4 semifinals. Esparza was the Freeway league MVP for the second consecutive year after hitting .545 with 12 homers, seven doubles, four triples 35 RBIs and 44 runs.

Madison Osias

Orange Lutheran

Senior

Utility

Highlights: Osias, who signed with Ole Miss, was one of the county's top pitchers and power hitters and she helped lead the Lancers to the Trinity League title. Osias was 11-3 with two saves and a 2.12 ERA and she hit .406 with 11 homers, 11 doubles, 26 runs and 39 RBIs.

Nicole Schroeder

Esperanza

Senior

Designated hitter

Highlights: Schroeder, who signed with Arkansas, is the third Schroeder sister to make first team All-County. Schroeder was at her best against Esperanza's toughest opposition and in Century League games. She hit over .400 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs for the season and she was better than .500 in league play to power the Aztecs to a Century League championship.

Erika Campbell

Pacifica

Senior

Outfielder

Highlights: Campbell, who signed with Oklahoma State, helped lead the Mariners to the Empire League title and the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals. Campbell came through in the clutch when Pacifica needed her the most. She hit .473 with three homers, six doubles, 25 runs and 23 RBIs.

Casey Africano

Edison

Senior

Outfielder

Highlights: Africano, who signed with Notre Dame, was the catalyst for one of the top offenses in the county. She hit .416 with six homers, four doubles, a triple and 32 RBIs. She made the OC Coaches All-Star team and the she was on the Orange County All-Star team that beat the Riverside County All-Stars.

Jade Vecvanags

Orange Lutheran

Junior

Outfielder

Highlights: Vecvanags, who committed to Illinois, put up huge numbers on offense and as part of Orange Lutheran's 1-2 punch at pitcher. She hit .407 with 10 homers, five doubles, two triples, 25 runs and 26 RBIs. In the circle, she was 16-1 with a 0.86 ERA and 155 strikeouts in 114 innings.
