TRACK AND FIELD: RAMBO STOOD OUT

They didn’t win titles at the CIF State Track and Field Championships this past weekend, but there were several county athletes who turned in notable performances that went under the radar.

Leading that group was Mater Dei senior Ashlyn Rambo who finished fourth in the girls 800 meters. Rambo capped a remarkable year in which she led the county in the 800 and set a Division 2 record at the CIF-SS Track Finals with a time of 2:08.75.

Costa Mesa’s Quinton Bell ran a wind-aided 10.51 to finish third in the 100.

Tesoro sophomore Amanda Gehrich finished third in the girls 1,600. She was clocked at 4:52.20.

Dana Hills sophomore Jake Ogden recorded the best time among county boys in the 3,200 with an 8:59.12, which placed him fifth.

AQUATICS: JSERRA HIRES CLEMENTS

JSerra has hired Kevin Clements, a former Auburn All-American swimmer and USC assistant, as its aquatics director and swim coach, JSerra athletic director Jim Hartigan announced.

CROSS COUNTRY: BRIERLY TO COACH EDISON GIRLS, TOO  

Edison boys cross country coach Brian Brierly will also be the Chargers’ girls cross country coach, according to Athletic Director Rich Boyce. Brierly will replace Jeanne Formosa.

Formosa resigned as coach of the girls cross country and girls track and field teams last month.

FOOTBALL: WALLER NAMES FOUR FINALISTS

Servite quarterback Travis Waller announced he has narrowed his college choices to four: Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Northwestern.

Ohio State is the only one of the four that has not made an offer to Waller (6-4, 195), a first-team All-County pick last season as a junior. Waller plans to announce his decision July 1.

BOYS SOCCER: SUMMER LEAGUES TO START

The Sunny Hills Summer League will begin its month-long tournament next week.

Eleven teams, most from Orange County, are entered this year. …

Servite will play in the Westminster Summer League, which begins on June 23 at Westminster High. Edison, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach and Segerstrom are also entered in the tournament, which ends July 18.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: PLUMMER, MIRKOVIC TO PLAY FOR U.S. 

Aliso Niguel’s Kathryn Plummer and Woodbridge’s Mima Mirkovic have been selected to the U.S. Girls Youth National Team that will compete at the NORCECA U-18 Continental Championships in Costa Rica from June 23-29.

The team begins trainining in Colorado on Friday.

Plummer and Mirkovic will also represent the U.S. in the FIVB U-17 Beach World Championships in Acapulco, Mexico from July 15-20. From there, Plummer and Mirkovic will travel to Minnesota for the Girls Junior National Championships, which begin June 30.
