LA HABRA – Jacob Fimbres reached into his bag of touchdown tricks and managed to pull out several as he scored six touchdowns to lead Sonora to a 41-23 victory over Whittier in its nonleague season opening game Friday night at La Habra High.

Fimbres wasted little time as he scored on a 40-yard run on the Raiders’ fourth play from scrimmage. The Raiders saw little of the ball the rest of the quarter and trailed 14-6 early in the second quarter.

But Fimbres put his speed on display again as he blew past Cardinals defenders for a 65-yard run on what was a one-play drive for the Raiders.

The Cardinals controlled the clock for most of the second quarter as well and dominated the first half in terms of plays from scrimmage, 44-19, and time of possession, 18:29 to 5:31.

But a late drive behind four completions from Cole McDonald and capped by a powerful 6-yard touchdown run up the middle on fourth-and-1 gave the Raiders a 20-16 halftime lead.

Fimbres, who finished with 292 yards rushing, put together another one-play drive for the Raiders as he spun and twisted his way out of the arms of Cardinal defenders to score on a 19-yard run. The Raiders defense forced its third turnover of the night, giving the ball right back to the offense.

Fimbres put together his highlight touchdown run of the night early in the fourth quarter. He took the ball down the sideline and hurdled a Cardinals defender on his way to a 20-yard score.

He finished off the night with a 71-yard touchdown run in the final minute.

Despite the heat, the Raiders defense got better in the second half and finished with four turnovers.
