HUNTINGTON BEACH – After struggling for the last couple of weeks, the Edison girls cross country team once again resembled one of the county’s elite teams.

The Chargers recorded a perfect 5-0 record against their league competitors en route to winning the Sunset League Preview Meet on Wednesday at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Edison was looking to rebound after placing 18th in the sweepstakes race at the Woodbridge/Estancia/Costa Mesa Invitational this past weekend.

The Chargers, ranked No. 9 in the county, had three runners finish among the top eight, led by senior Gabrielle Yatuaro (18:37) who was fourth.

Julia Sienski (18:41) and Alexa Yatauro (18:59) placed sixth and eighth, respectively, for the Chargers.

“This race is a good confidence builder,” Chargers coach Jeannie Formosa said. “The girls know that they still have a lot of work to do and we’re focused on doing well toward the end of the season.”

Marina, ranked No. 5 in the county, finished second with a 4-1 mark. Fountain Valley (3-2) was third.

Los Alamitos senior Sara Bass took home the individual victory, grabbing the lead in the final mile and winning in a time of 18:15.

“I paced myself off of my teammate Claire (Rainey), calmed myself down, and just focused on the race,” Bass said.

Marina’s Eileen Stressling (18:23) finished second, with Rainey (18:27) coming in third place.

The boys race saw No. 4 Fountain Valley take control in the final half-mile and pull away to post a 5-0 double-dual meet record.

Hunter Gulino (15:47.7), Norberto Osorio (15:47.8) and David Abraham (15:47.9) led Fountain Valley’s effort by finishing second, third and fourth overall.

“The biggest thing for us going forward is consistency in training and keeping a positive and hungry attitude,” said Barons coach Martin Pennell said.

Edison was second with a 4-1 record, and Huntington Beach (3-2) finished in third place.

Edison’s Cooper Kossick took home the individual race victory, separating himself from a tight pack late in the race and clocking a wining time of 15:45.
