GARDEN GROVE – La Quinta put together a game-winning, 90-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter to beat Garey of Pomona, 27-20, in a nonleague game Friday at Bolsa Grande High.

La Quinta (3-1) is off to its best start in six years.

“It feels incredible,” said Coach Andy Diaz. “To be 3-1, that’s the best record we’ve had since I’ve been here.”

The score was tied, 20-20, when La Quinta started a drive from its own 10-yard line. The Aztecs pushed the 90 yards down the field and scored the tiebreaking touchdown.

Aztecs running backs Kyle Nguyen and Dylan Do did the majority of the work on the drive, which included a crucial 17-yard run from Nguyen. With 5:38 left in the game, running back Tam Le pushed the ball across the goal line for the winning touchdown.

Do finished with 194 yards rushing.

Wide receiver Samuel Lee scored on an 80-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter for Garey (3-2).

“That’s a great team,” said Diaz, as he pointed to the Vikings.

He said La Quinta focused on eliminating penalties and mistakes in the second half.
