Stephen Jaffke kicked field goals of 32 and 38 yards on the uneven natural turf.

The last time La Quinta qualified for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs was in 2010. From 2011-14, the Aztecs were 3-17 in league games.

La Quinta fifth-year coach Andy Diaz is not ready to talk playoffs just yet, but he likes the direction the team is going.

“The biggest thing is that our program is growing,” Diaz said. “We have 115 kids in the program, the freshman team is doing well, the JVs are doing well and the kids are believing in themselves.”

The Aztecs freshman team beat Rancho Alamitos’ freshmen last week, 18-15, the first La Quinta football win over Rancho Alamitos at any level in close to 20 years.

La Quinta controlled the game from the beginning, converting two early turnovers into two touchdowns. Enriquez opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run and Garrica later took off on a 57-yard scoring run in the first quarter.

Jaffke kicked a 32-yard field goal as time expired at the end of the second quarter to push the La Quinta lead to 17-0.

Enriquez’ 1-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter made it 24-0. In the fourth quarter, Jaffe kicked a 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, Le scored on a 65-yard run and Garrica tacked on a 2-yard run in the final minute of the game.

Bolsa Grande (0-7, 0-2) plays a home game next Thursday against Garden Grove (4-2, 1-0).
