Having put together a perfect regular-season campaign that included knocking off some of the Southland’s perennial powers, Los Alamitos was awarded the No. 1 overall seed in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 tennis playoffs on Monday.

The Griffins (14-0) were one of four county teams awarded the top overall seed in their divisions. Santa Margarita (Division 2), Canyon (Division 3) and Laguna Beach (Division 4) were also placed atop its bracket.

Orange County schools accounted for the No. 1 overall seed in four of the CIF’s five divisions.

In being selected as the top seed, the Griffins snap University’s seven-year stranglehold as the No. 1 squad headed into the postseason.

University earned the No. 4 seed in Division 1, meaning the Trojans and the Griffins could face off in a semifinals match on May 20. The Griffins topped University, 11-7, in March, ending the Trojans’ nine-year unbeaten streak against county opponents.

The Trojans are looking to win their sixth consecutive CIF-SS team title.

Santa Margarita and Canyon each take 15-match winning streaks into the postseason, while Laguna Beach has won 11 of its last 12.

Team finals for all five divisions will May 22 at The Claremont Club.
