Blake Burzell has broken the career scoring record at Laguna Beach.

And it’s still the first half of his junior year. And basketball is not his best sport.

Burzell got the record while scoring 26 points in Breakers’ loss to Bishop Manogue of Reno on Friday in the consolation final of the Senators Division of the Under Armour tournament.

Burzell, a 6-foot-6 wing, has 477 points in 17 games this season, an average of 28 points a game, and 1,480 points in his three seasons at Laguna Beach.

Burzell is also a pitcher for the school’s baseball team. He committed to Duke University for baseball.

• There will be a Celebration of Life ceremony for Mark Thornton, the longtime coach at Capistrano Valley and Dana Hills, on Saturday at St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach at 1 p.m. A reception will follow. The celebration continues Saturday, starting at 5 p.m., at Costello’s Neighborhood Tavern in Mission Viejo.

• Thornton died over Christmas weekend. He was 74. Thoronton was Capistrano Valley boys basketball coach for 15 seasons and later coached the Dana Hills boys basketball team for seven seasons. He coached Capo Valley to two CIF-Southern Section championships.

• There are several attractive nonleague games on Tuesday’s schedule. Among them are Huntington Beach at Northwood (Huntington Beach battles for all 32 minutes, Northwood just won the Tustin Classic), University at Sonora (if you like high-scoring games, hit this one), Villa Park at Valley Christian of Cerritos (Villa Park is having a fine season, Valley Christian good defensive team), and Los Alamitos at Buena Park (two of the top 15 teams in O.C.).

• A good league game Tuesday is Sage Hill at Crean Lutheran in the Academy League. Sage Hill is 9-3 and has a league win over St. Margaret’s. Crean Lutheran is quick and physical, and looked good at the Orange Holiday Classic.

• The CIF-Southern Section released preseason rankings last month. The first in-season poll will be released Monday, Jan. 9.
