Ty Calhoun scored a team-high 18 points including a clutch 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter as Woodbridge defeated Laguna Beach, 65-63, Thursday in the Orange County North/South Challenge at El Toro High.

Woodbridge improved to 7-5. Laguna Beach is 9-4.

Laguna Beach took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter. Woodbridge’s Daniel Thatcher scored on a baseline drive to put the Warriors ahead to stay, 55-54, with 2:02 remaining. Calhoun followed with a 3-pointer to push the lead to 58-54.

Laguna Beach senior Blake Burzell scored a game-high 25 points including five 3-pointers. He went into this week as Orange County’s leading scorer at 30.3 points a game.

Woodbridge coach John Halagan lauded his team for limiting Burzell to 25.

“Our kids did a heck of a job accounting for Orange County’s leading scorer,” Halagan said. “Laguna Beach executes offensively as well as anyone. This year, they’re doubly tough because they have so many guys who can hurt you shooting beyond the arc.

“(Woodbridge assistant coach) Steve Scoggin came up with a great game plan and our kids made some big plays down the stretch.”

Evan Maggard scored 12 points for the Warriors, including three 3-pointers. Grady Morgan and Charlie Rounaghi added 12 apiece for Laguna Beach.

The North/South Challenge continues at El Toro today with six games, starting with Saddleback Valley Christian vs. Pacifica Christian at 12:30 p.m. Saddleback Valley Christian senior Trey Smith and Pacifica Christian freshman Dominick Harris are among O.C.’s leading scorers. El Toro plays Cypress in the day’s final game at 8 p.m.
