CdM bench comes in handy against Beckman
Corona del Mar received key contributions from its bench Tuesday in an 87-81 win over Beckman in a Pacific Coast League boys basketball game at Beckman.
Sea Kings reserves scored 14 points of the team’s 32 fourth-quarter points. Since Beckman scored 35 points in the quarter, those bench points were crucial.
“Chase Garbers, DJ Rodman, Mitch Haly, Robert Cuevas,” said Corona del Mar coach Ryan Schachter, listing those bench players. “The bench was the difference for us.”
It was a win Corona del Mar needed. It improved the Sea Kings to 4-3 in league and put them in sole possession of third place, the Pacific Coast League’s third and final guaranteed playoff berth. Beckman is in second at 5-2, two games behind league-leading Northwood (7-0).
With three minutes left in the game, Corona del Mar had an 18 point lead. Beckman’s Michael Yee, who scored only one point in the first half, got hot. He scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, including three 3-pointers.
The Patriots got no closer then seven points. Rodman scored seven points in the fourth quarter and Garbers scored five, including three three free throws in the final moments. Cuevas had scored five points in the first quarter, Haly scored six in the second to help the Sea Kings in the early going.
Sam Kobrine led Corona del Mar (17-7 overall) with 25 points. Matt Ctvrtlik scored 23 points with eight rebounds for the Sea Kings.
Yee finished with 24 points, six more than his per-game average. Justin Reinhardt scored 15 points and Kris Weissberger added 14 for the Patriots (17-6).
Corona del Mar is No. 8 in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3A rankings. Beckman is No. 8 in Division 1A.
Corona del Mar plays host to University (3-4 in league) on Friday. Beckman is at Irvine in a league game Friday.
