Orange Lutheran is a talented boys basketball team that played almost flawlessly Wednesday night.

The fourth-ranked Lancers were outstanding in every way as they beat No. 6 Servite, 67-46, in a Trinity League game at Servite High.

Orange Lutheran shot 54 percent from the floor, which is a fine percentage for any level of basketball, but especially for a high school team playing in an opponent’s gym. That it happened in Servite’s gym, with its famously vociferous and energetic student section, made it even more impressive.

The Lancers (14-3, 2-1) worked the ball around patiently on offense, rarely shooting before four passes were made in half-court sets.

“That’s our goal,” said Orange Lutheran senior Zac Jervis. “Play as a team, because when we do individual stuff it’s not a good look.”

Jervis, a 6-foot-6 forward, led Orange Lutheran with 15 points, including nine in the fourth quarter. Joseph Riley scored 13 points, KaVaughn Scott scored 12 with seven rebounds and three blocked shots, and Chris Williams scored 12 for the Lancers.

Servite’s Cameron Griffin scored a game-high 17 points. Jacob Hughes scored 14 points with six rebounds and two blocks for the Friars.

Defensively, Lutheran gave no easy shots to Servite (12-6, 0-2), which shot 38 percent from the floor.

Lutheran took the lead 41 seconds into the game and never trailed after that. The Lancers had a 21-13 lead after the first quarter, a 36-26 lead at halftime and took a 49-38 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Orange Lutheran is ranked No. 1 in CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA. Servite is No. 3 in 3A.

Orange Lutheran plays at home against JSerra on Friday and takes on state No. 8 De La Salle of Concord on Monday in Berkeley.
