Mater Dei made it obvious last week that it is the No. 1 boys basketball team in Orange County.
Orange Lutheran made it obvious Wednesday that it is No. 2.
The Lancers took control early and did not lose it Wednesday. They beat Santa Margarita, 67-49, in a Trinity League game at Orange Lutheran High.
Orange Lutheran is No. 2 in the Orange County top 10 this week, behind Mater Dei. Santa Margarita is No. 3.
The Lancers improved to 17-3 overall and 3-1 in league. They have equaled the number of Trinity victories they had last year when they went 3-7.
Santa Margarita is 12-3 overall, 2-2 in league.
Rogers Printup scored 17 points with four 3-pointers and seven rebounds for Lutheran. Keisean Lucier-South scored 15 points with seven rebounds. C.J. Hankins scored 13 points and Zack Jervis added 10.
Freshman forward Jordan Guest led Santa Margarita with 13 points and six rebounds. Scott Wesierski scored 11 points. Eagles sixth man JT Robinson, a freshman, did not play because of a growth plate issue.
Orange Lutheran, which, like Santa Margarita, lost to Mater Dei last week, zoomed to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter. The Lancers carried a 22-9 lead into the second quarter and had a 41-25 advantage at halftime.
Santa Margarita had a strong third quarter, outscoring the Lancers, 16-9, to make it a nine-point game going in the fourth. Jervis scored six points in the fourth quarter and Lucier-South contributed five points in Lutheran’s 17-point final quarter.
Printup, who scored 18 points in Lutheran’s win over California of Whittier on Monday, said the Lancers should be back on track.
“We knew we had to get back to what we do,” Printup said, “and that’s play defense and get stops. That’s what we did tonight.”
