GARDEN GROVE – For the last month, Garden Grove’s boys basketball team has been writing its way into the school record book.

The Argonauts set the school record for points in a game with 105 against Baldwin Park on Jan. 9.

On Friday night, Paul Singh broke a record that had only stood for a month.

Singh sank nine 3-pointers against Bolsa Grande in the Argonauts’ 86-59 victory in a Garden Grove League game at Garden Grove High.

The previous school record-holder for 3-pointers was teammate Felix Ramirez, who made eight in a win over El Monte on Dec. 16.

Singh’s 31-point outburst was accompanied by a pair of impressive double-doubles. Chris O’Farrell had a game-high 32 points with 10 rebounds, and Felix Ramirez scored 11 points while handing out 15 assists.

The Argonauts (17-2, 2-0) expected to be tested, and they were early on. Nate Felix and Noah Santiago scored six points apiece in the first quarter as the Matadors (11-5, 1-1) took a 20-17 lead into the second period.

There was no stopping Garden Grove in the second quarter. The Argonauts erupted for 40 points in the frame, seizing control of the game with a 57-37 advantage at halftime.

The second quarter belonged to Singh. The senior knocked down the last six of a string of seven straight shots from distance to send the crowd into a frenzy.

“It’s an honor,” Singh said of holding the record. “We just work hard every day for that moment. We just go out there and perform.”

Sebastian Waked had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Matadors.

Garden Grove racked up 12 3-pointers.

“This is the first time in my 17 years (at Garden Grove) that I’ve had six kids be able to hit threes consistently,” Argonauts coach Ken Frank said. “We always have maybe one or two kids that are effective shooters, but I’m blessed this year. I’ve got six. That doesn’t come around very often.”

Singh called the win a confidence-builder, adding that the Argonauts have their eyes on a challenge to come later in league.

“We just need wins like these, so that we can get to the big game,” he said. “The big game’s going to be against Santiago, at their house.”

The Argonauts will travel to face the two-time defending Garden Grove League champions on Jan. 26.

The 40 points scored by the Argonauts in the second quarter was also a school record. Garden Grove has won 14 in a row.

In the fourth quarter, senior Matt Goldowski scored on a layup for the first points of his career.
