While it won’t show up on any stat sheet, JSerra’s Lexi Vail played the defensive game of her life Saturday evening.

Assigned to shadow Oaks Christian of Westlake Village guard Katie Campbell, Vail limited the sharpshooter to three points, 14 below her season average.

Campbell, like the rest of her teammates, struggled to find any rhythm offensively against JSerra’s box-and-one defense.

As a result, JSerra bested Oaks Christian, 34-31, in the second round of the CIF Division 4 Southern California Regional playoffs at JSerra High.

“We knew it was going to be a battle coming in,” Lions coach Mary Rossignol said. “(Campbell) is the real deal for them. We switched defenses up, and Lexi Vail played a heck of a game to limit her.”

The 31 point total was lowest output of the season for Oaks Christian’s (20-12). For Campbell, it was only the third time she was held to under 10 points this year.

Like their counterparts, however, JSerra (23-10) also struggled to put the ball into the hoop. Lions junior guard Coco Miller went 2 for 10 in the first half, but led all scorers with nine points at the break.

The Lions opened the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run, extending their lead to 31-23, the largest of the game.

Fourth-seeded JSerra will travel to meet Serra of Gardena on Tuesday.

In Division 1:

Troy 40, Camarillo 37: Barbara Sitanggan fought through double and triple teams, players tugging at her jersey and trapping her as soon as she caught the ball. Finally, in the fourth quarter, the shots began to fall for her and the Warriors.

Sitanggan scored 13 points in the fourth and teammate Rebecca Lazuka positioned herself for an offensive rebound and go-ahead layup in the final minute as the Warriors (24-7) came back from a double-digit, second-half deficit to knock off the Scorpions (28-5). Sitanggan led all scorers with 19 points and Lazuka made the two biggest plays of the game.

With Troy trailing, 37-36, in the final minute, Cori Okada’s go-ahead shot attempt missed the rim, but Lazuka waited for it on the right block. Her uncontested rebound and putback gave Troy its first lead since 8-6.

When Camarillo tried to respond, Lazuka – who played the fourth quarter with four fouls – smothered Cameran Bahnsen down low, stuffing her shot attempt and helping recover the ball.

“I was just going for it,” Lazuka said. “Didn’t really know if I would get the foul or not.”

Troy will face Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley in the regional semifinal Tuesday.

In Division 3:

Santa Margarita 78, Garfield of Los Angeles 56: Things started slow for the Eagles in the second round of the CIF Division 3 Southern California Regionals.

But in the second quarter, things picked up in a hurry. Santa Margarita reeled off 16 consecutive points to start the second, which set the tone against the Bulldogs at Santa Margarita.

“We watched game film on them before, so we knew they have heart,” Santa Margarita’s Zaire Williams said. “So we just wanted to have more heart and come out with even more pressure and energy so they couldn’t match us.”

Williams had a solid performance with 22 points. Garfield (24-13) managed to shrink the deficit to nine points late in the second quarter, but was never able to get closer than that following the 16-0 spurt.

The Eagles (20-13) advance to the Southern California semifinals Tuesday.
