Brea Olinda suffers another big loss without Kim
BREA - Without star point guard Anna Kim in the lineup, fourth-ranked Brea Olinda looked out of sync and suffered a stunning loss to El Dorado, 37-36, in a Century League finale Thursday at El Dorado.
Kim, one of the top players in the county the past two seasons, suffered a fractured ankle Friday night against Villa Park. The Ladycats are now 0-2 without Kim – they lost to Foothill, 39-19, on Tuesday – and they finished the regular season in a first-place tie with Foothill.
Foothill defeated Canyon, 51-42, Thursday to join the Ladycats at the top of the league standings.
Brea (18-6, 10-2) will still receive the Century League's top seed when the playoff brackets are released Sunday afternoon.
"It really gives us a big boost of confidence," Jones said.
Shaylissa Jarrett carried the Ladycats in the first half, scoring 11 of her 13 points to help Brea to a 22-17 halftime lead.
The two teams entered the fourth quarter separated by one point. El Dorado took over from there, scoring three baskets on offensive rebounds.
"We didn't rebound in the fourth quarter well enough to win," Brea coach Kim Cram-Torres said. "That really hurt us the other night (against Foothill)."
Tori Bryant hit two late free throws to help Brea draw within 37-36, but Jarrett missed a jumper with four seconds remaining.
"They lost one of the best players in the county," Hawks coach Wayne Carlson said. "They're still a really good team (without Kim)."
