Canyon earns pivotal victory

ANAHEIM – No. 8 Villa Park’s Lamont Tyler is listed at 6-foot-10. His counterpart from the Canyon boys basketball team, Chandler Dignam, is 6-foot-1.

After Tyler scored 27 points in the first meeting between the two teams, you’d figure the second matchup would be more of the same.

On Tuesday, Dignam proved size doesn’t matter as he scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds in Comanches’ 83-71 upset of the eighth-ranked Spartans (19-6, 9-2).

Dignam bested Tyler this time around as Villa Park’s mammoth center was held to 13 points and four rebounds.

“I just did what I could to help my team win tonight,” Dignam said. “We knew coming in (Tyler) was having a great season so far, so we had a great game plan and executed as best we could.”

The Comanches (17-9, 8-3) received contributions from all over as five players scored in double figures. JoJo Ballestero was the maestro of an offense that drained eight 3’s.

Ballestero scored 17 points, but his brother, Anthony, helped put the Spartans away by scoring all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter, which included four free throws down the stretch.

In a losing effort, Luke Selway probably had the most impressive stat line of any player as he scored 33 points and hauled in 14 rebounds for Villa Park.

Canyon led by 10 at the break, but the Spartans rallied to get within three in the fourth. It wasn’t enough as Dignam made big plays defensively and Ballestero sealed it offensively.

“I wished we could play a little better defense, but sometimes you have to out score people,” Comanches head coach Nate Harrison said. “I’m really proud of the guys, that was a big win for us.”
