Saddleback football coach Rob Thompson, who helped improve the Roadrunners’ program and guided the school to two playoff appearances, has resigned after six seasons, he said Monday.

Thompson said he resigned for personal reasons but remains the school’s athletic director.

“I did everything I could do for the program,” he said. “I feel it’s time for new leadership. … I maxed out my energy.”

Thompson led Saddleback to playoff appearances in 2014 and 2015 but the Roadrunners, who finished 6-5 each season, lost in the first round. They finished 3-7 this season, tied for fourth in the Orange Coast League with Costa Mesa and Estancia at 1-4.

Thompson cited improved academic performance, greater player participation and spirit and financial stability amongst his accomplishments.
