The CIF-Southern Section office continues to work on playoff divisions for the 2016-17 school year, the first year for performance-based divisions for many sports including football.

Football playoff division configurations – which schools would be in which divisions – were published in some media outlets earlier this spring. CIF-SS spokesman Thom Simmons said those published configurations will not be what the final configurations will be when they are released in August, and that adjustments to the configurations could be ongoing until August.

In past seasons, all of a league’s football playoff teams played in the same football playoff division. Beginning with the 2016 season, playoff teams will be sent to divisions based upon the teams’ playoff success in recent previous seasons. That will be the same system used for other team sports, too.

GARDNER HIRED BY FAIRMONT PREP

Joedy Gardner did not stay out of Orange County basketball for long.

Fairmont Prep hired Gardner on Monday to coach its boys basketball team. JSerra didn’t renew Gardner’s contract after this past season, Gardner’s seventh as the school’s boys basketball coach.

JSerra advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA quarterfinals in the 2015-16 season. The Lions won the 4AA championship in 2014.

Fairmont Prep finished 5-16 overall and 0-6 in the San Joaquin League in 2015-16.
