San Clemente's Darnold honored as player of the year
ANAHEIM – San Clemente quarterback Sam Darnold earned another major award Saturday.
The USC signee collected the O.C. Prep Football Player of Year trophy at the player recognition luncheon for the Brea Lions Orange County All-Star Game. The 56th edition of the game will be played July 9 at Orange Coast College at 7:15 p.m.
In the fall, Darnold was selected the Register’s 2014 offensive player of the year after leading the Tritons (12-2) to the Sea View League title and a runner-up finish in the CIF-SS Southwest Division. He also was the CIF offensive player of the year for the Southwest.
Darnold became the second consecutive quarterback to collect the O.C. award, joining Huntington Beach’s Kai Ross, now at Cal Poly SLO.
In roster news, the North has added Villa Park linebacker Xavier Hernandez, Esperanza defensive back Kaizon Alon-Alon, Sunny Hills linebacker Jason Critser and Kennedy lineman Chris Alvarez.
The South has added Northwood quarterback Brian Abel, Corona del Mar receiver Cole Collins, JSerra offensive lineman Joe Munroe and Tesoro defensive back Josh Nelson.
