MISSION VIEJO – Dawson Piper led the Capistrano Valley Christian to a 34-24 victory over Mary Star of the Sea in a nonleague game Friday at Capistrano Valley High School.

The junior threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns. Eight of his 16 completions were for more than 25 yards.

CVC struck first when Piper found Ben Sukut for a 21-yard touchdown.

Mary Star running back William Davis scored a one yard touchdown to cut the Eagles’ lead to 7-6.

On the ensuing drive, Piper hit Sukut for an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage.

Later in the half, Dylan Baird had a 28-yard touchdown catch and the Eagles went into halftime up, 21-9. Piper had 281 yards and three touchdowns passing in the first half.

The Eagles held the Stars to nine points in the half despite allowing 238 rushing yards.

On the opening series of the second half, Piper found Sukut again for a 77-yard touchdown pass.

The Stars scored 15 consecutive points, capped by a 1-yard run by Vinnie Lauro, who also converted a 2-point conversion to cut the Eagles’ lead to three.

Piper drove the Eagles and KCI Thompson scored the team’s first rushing TD to extend the lead to 10.
