OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
WESTERN PIONEERS
Coach: Dan Davidson
Last season: 2-8 overall, 1-4 league
Scouting report: The Pioneers have four starters returning on offense and four on defense, but there are also nine sophomores slated to start. The Pioneers are hoping some of the new players can provide a spark. They are going with sophomore quarterback Anthony Munoz, who had 28 touchdown passes last year on the freshman team, and sophomore wide receiver Aaron Bojorquez. Coach Dan Davidson has returning starters up front on both sides, including returning all-league lineman Jeff Alo. On defense, the linebacker core of Jacob Domino, Max Perez and Robert Vargas will be important to the Pioneers’ plans.
Bottom line: The Pioneers would like to pick up a few more victories this season. If the young players develop, the future looks bright for Western.
Players to watch: Jeff Alo, G, Sr.; Jordan Hawkins, RB/CB, Sr.; Brandon Jackson, RB, Jr.; Cole Howard, C, Jr.; John Ojelabi, WR, Jr.
