FOUNTAIN VALLEY – April 8 was the day Fountain Valley boys tennis coach Harshul Patel had been salivating for, and understandably so.

Prior to Tuesday afternoon, Patel hadn’t had the opportunity to send his top varsity lineup into a dual match.

The Barons’ two-time defending Sunset League MVP, John Lieu, had spent the better part of the last month on the sidelines, recovering from an ankle injury. Meanwhile, Darren Dinh, a highly touted transfer from Huntington Beach High, had watch alongside Lieu as he was forced to sit out part of the season because of transfer rules.

Patel knew his potential lineup looked good on paper. On Tuesday, he finally witnessed just how lethal his team could be the rest of the season.

With all of his players eligible for action, the fourth-ranked Barons cruised past No. 10 Marina, 13-5, in a Sunset League dual match at Fountain Valley High.

“I’m above and beyond excited,” Patel said of his squad. “This is truly the best team we’ve had in the longest time. We are almost at a perfect roster right now. This is the moment I was waiting for.”

The Barons (6-4-1, 3-1) dominated doubles play, winning all nine sets in a rapid 90 minutes.

Dinh was impressive in his debut alongside partner Darrin Nguyen. The duo only dropped two games en route to 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 set victories.

As he works his way back to 100-percent health, Lieu played doubles with Parker Braverman. Patel hopes to have his star singles player back in the No. 1 position for the team’s April 21 meeting with No. 2 Los Alamitos.

“That’s a match everybody is waiting for,” Patel explained. “We definitely want to go and take advantage of what we have right now and perform every time we step onto the court.”

Eric Nguyen pulled off the upset of the day when he defeated Marina No. 1 singles player Max Cancilla, 6-4.

Nguyen finished the afternoon as the only singles player to go unbeaten. He defeated Brendan Baar, 6-0, after starting his day with a 6-0 win over Kevin Manouchehri.

The Vikings (11-3 overall) dropped to 2-2 in league.

The Barons take on Edison on Thursday before playing No. 6 San Clemente on Monday.
