The Register’s preview of the CIF Southern California Regional boys basketball championship game on Saturday.

VILLA PARK (25-6) VS. COLONY OF ONTARIO (29-5)

Where, when: Colony High, Saturday, 6 p.m.

Outlook: Villa Park lost to Colony, 74-70, in the CIF-SS Division 2AA championship game March 4. Villa Park coach Kevin Reynolds said before that game that Colony “lives off of turnovers” and for that game he was correct. Villa Park made 20 turnovers in the game. Colony also got 39 free throws and made 23 of them. Rodrick McCobb, a 6-5 senior guard, scored 19 points with nine rebounds. Top-seeded Colony advanced to its first regional boys basketball championship game by beating Rancho Christian of Temecula, 60-53, in the first round, Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach, 83-47, in the second round and Oxnard, 84-77, in the semifinals. Villa Park is in its second regionals championship game. The Spartans lost to Mater Dei in the Southern California Regionals Division II final in 2006. The Spartans defeated Gardena, 71-63, in the first round of regionals, Carnegie of Riverside, 56-52, in the second round, and Orange Glen of Escondido, 72-62, in overtime in the the semifinals. Villa Park 6-4 senior guard Myles Franklin is averaging 18 points a game. Caleb Banuelos, a 6-0 senior, averages 15 points a game and 6-5 sophomore Julien Franklin, Myles’ brother, scores 14 points a game. The winner of this game plays the winner of Saturday’s CIF Northern California Regionals Division III championship game between Mission of San Franciso (33-1) and Vanden of Fairfield (30-3) in Sacramento.
