Boys scholar-athlete of the week: Troy Furniss, Villa Park
The three-year varsity attacker leads Orange County in goals with 157. The senior’s total ranks second in Villa Park history to Olympian Shea Buckner’s 185 in 2004. In the spring, he will start his fourth year on the varsity team. Furniss is taking AP calculus, AP economics, AP English and AP government. The two-time academic All-American with USA Water Polo also is a member of the National Honor Society. At Villa Park, Furniss is a member of Club Sandwich, which feeds the homeless, and Paracletes for Athletes, which raises money for the Swim Like Mike scholarship fund for physically challenged athletes. Furniss was selected homecoming king this fall. He is interested in attending USC, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Redlands or Whittier College.
