Tyler, Selway lead Villa Park past Canyon

VILLA PARK - Over the last handful of Villa Park boys basketball games, much ink has been spilled -- and deservedly so -- in lauding the stellar play of Lamont Tyler, the Spartans' 6-foot-10 center and matchup nightmare.

While the mountain of a junior dazzled once again Friday night with 27 points -- 11 coming in the fourth quarter -- the quiet production of forward Luke Selway was just as significant to the No. 10 Spartans' 74-66 victory over Canyon in a Century League game at Villa Park.

"Lamont played great, but Luke Selway was phenomenal tonight," Spartans coach Kevin Reynolds said. "Lamont might have had a big fourth quarter, but Luke carried a lot of the load throughout the game, and put us in position to take the lead late."

A pair of early baskets by Selway (16 points, 12 rebounds) in the fourth quarter erased Canyon's one-point advantage, and allowed Villa Park to exploit Tyler's eight-inch size advantage underneath.

"We wanted to get Lamont some rest there in the third quarter so he'd be fresh down the stretch," Reynolds said. "All our guys -- Luke, Kevin Olsen, Brian (Arcinas) -- stepped up and kept us in the game with him on the bench."

A game played within four points through three back-and-forth quarters (10 tied scores in all) was ultimately swung on an 11-4 run by Villa Park (15-4, 5-0) to open the fourth.

With the Spartans leading 59-53 midway through the quarter, Tyler scored nine points in the final three minutes -- including four late free throws on one-and-one attempts -- to keep the Comanches (13-7, 4-1) at bay.

After hitting nine 3-pointers in the first 24 minutes, Canyon went cold from deep in the final frame, missing each of its attempts.

Chandler Dignam led the visitors with 20 points.

"This is so much fun; it's so much fun," Reynolds said. "All the games in the Century League are close, but there's nothing like Canyon-Villa Park. This has to be the best environment in Orange County."
