Huntington Beach girls maintain momentum, sweep Edison

HUNTINGTON BEACH - After winning the La Jolla Coastal Classic on Saturday, the Huntington Beach girls volleyball team didn’t have much time to celebrate.

The Oilers knew they had a Sunset League match with third-ranked Edison on Tuesday night.

Oilers coach Craig Pazanti’s concern about the quick turnaround gave way to satisfaction with a job well done, as the fifth-ranked Oilers swept the Chargers, 25-21, 25-21, 26-24, at Edison High.

“You hope there are times during a season where something clicks, and I think when we were down in La Jolla, something clicked, and I felt the energy change with this team,” Pazanti said.

“While it was a little nerve-wracking to play seven matches before you have to play this team (Edison) on the road, I think it was good for us ... we saw what we could do and saw where our strengths and weaknesses are and adjust.”

The Oilers (20-2, 2-0) had several players that chipped in on the attack.

Cami Sanchez led the Oilers with 17 kills, Anna Carroll added nine, and Bailey Nelson had seven. Mahina Williamsen had five kills, in nine attempts, out of the middle.

The Oilers struggled to end the match in three sets. Edison led, 15-11, and, 20-17, but the Oilers made it to set point first, thanks to a net violation, 24-22.

Edison (16-3, 1-1) fought off set point twice, thanks to kills from Cassidy Dennison and a block from Lindsey Sparks. The Oilers scored the final two points to seal the victory.

“I expected a tough game, and we would have had to really play well to beat a team like that,” Edison coach Matt Skolnik said. “This is definitely a learning lesson and we need to bring it every match, especially in a tough league and against a tough opponent. (A) subpar effort is not going to cut it.”

Hannah Phair led the Chargers with 12 kills. Kristin Austin had seven. Sparks had 30 assists.

The teams will meet again Oct. 13 at Huntington Beach.
