Tenbrink, Huntington Beach run past Newport Harbor

FOR OCVARSITY.COM

HUNTINGTON BEACH – The early tale of Newport Harbor's Sunset League season had been one of close, but not close enough. The Sailors had lost to Fountain Valley and Edison, the league's co-leaders, by a combined six points.

Huntington Beach, meanwhile, had been struggling since a rough, flu-ridden recent trip to Orlando, Fla.

The Oilers showed no ill-effects while routing Newport Harbor, 77-62, in a Sunset League boys basketball game Friday night at Huntington Beach High.

Andrew Tenbrink had a game-high 28 points. Harley Ruder added 17, and Ryan Morissey, 16 to help the Oilers (12-6, 2-1).

Newport Harbor's Nic Sargeant scored six points in the first quarter, and the Sailors (9-10, 0-3) were moving the ball well.

The Oilers rode a hot shooting night to a decisive victory: shooting 52.6 percent.

After a clean first quarter left the teams tied at 13, the Oilers forced five turnovers in the second quarter. They cashed those in for 11 points on the other end, which was the difference in the game with the Oilers leading 39-28 at the half.

"We want to defend and run," said Oilers coach Fabian Luna. "That's been our philosophy since I got here seven years ago."

Morissey had the hot hand in the first half, scoring 14 points on 4 of 6 shooting from behind the arc.

In the third quarter, Tenbrink got hot, going on a 10-0 run by himself to give the Oilers a 61-43 advantage.

Tenbrink's run extended into the fourth quarter, where he sunk two 3-pointers to complete a streak of six consecutive field-goals made. Tenbrink scored 16 of the Oilers' 21 points in that span, spurring Huntington Beach to a 72-45 lead, their biggest lead of the night.

"If we play to our potential, we're going to be dangerous," said Tenbrink after his team cruised past the Sailors.
