Introducing OCVarsity.com digital access
Beginning Thursday afternoon, all original content on OCVarsity.com – namely articles, photo slideshows and videos – will be available exclusively to Orange County Register subscribers or to those who pay for la carte digital access.
Schedules, results, statistics, standings, rosters, player pages and our live scoreboard will remain free. All free content will have an orange icon beside the headline.
Using the Register's Digital Access is simple. As a subscriber, you need only to link your existing subscription to a new digital one or use your current OCRegister.com login. Doing so will give you access to all OCVarsity digital content in any format you choose (computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.) at any time for free. If you have a less-than-daily subscription, your free OCVarsity content will be limited to the days of your subscription.
If you are not yet a subscriber, you may sign up online at ocregister.com/sections/login, call 800-946-9449 or e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org to create an account and receive unlimited access to Orange County Register and OCVarsity content. The price of a seven-day subscription that provides access in all formats you choose is $7 per week.
An alternative option to a daily subscription is a Day Pass, which allows anyone with an account to have 24-hour access to OCRegister.com and OCVarsity.com digital content for $2.
Headlines on the OCVarsity home page and section pages will be accessible. After 90 days, OCVarsity content becomes free to everyone, subscriber and non-subscriber alike.
The reason for this change is simple. As a subscriber-focused business, our goal is to continually enhance what we deliver to our subscribers and reinforce the value of their investment in the Register.
For 108 years, the Register has played an incredibly important role in building community and connecting Orange County around things that are meaningful – like high school sports. Our owners have made incredible investments into the Register because they believe that when a local newspaper is vibrant, so is the community it serves.
If you are a Register subscriber, OCVarsity.com reader or both, you may have noticed the dramatic improvements in the quality and quantity of content during the past year.
The Register has hired 350 new staff members – 175 in the newsroom – and added 24 new sections. Community newspapers increased in size by 160 percent. We introduced Register Connect, which offers free four-packs of tickets to the Angels, Galaxy and many other entertainment venues.
High school sports coverage saw a tenfold increase during the 2012-13 school year, and OCVarsity added to its all-star roster of reporters, photographers and editors to cover every varsity sport in Orange County with unmatched depth.
OCVarsity's Saturday coverage of high school football increased by 100 percent last fall, and will once again publish a story, photo or recap from nearly every game played in Orange County this season.
Register is also bringing back its weekly OC Varsity Playbook section on Mondays and OC Varsity Hot Shots photography section on Wednesdays. You'll also see expanded coverage of high school sports within the Register's community newspapers, which feature hundreds more athletes in the paper. We even introduced an OCVarsity Arts section on Sundays.
Through our conversations with the community and letters you've sent, we know the Orange County community roots for the Register in the same way it roots for its high school teams and athletes.
As always, we appreciate your support of the Register and OCVarsity.
