Northwood scores in 7th, advances in playoffs

IRVINE – Northwood's softball team was frustrated for much of the first six innings in its CIF-SS Division 2 second round playoff game against Colton on Tuesday afternoon.

The Timberwolves scored a couple runs, but stranded nine runners. But they broke through in the seventh inning with a run to capture a 3-2 victory over the visiting Yellowjackets.

Northwood moves on to the quarterfinal round Thursday and will face Lakewood.

Catcher Lindsay Thomas led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, was sacrificed to third base by Lauren Han and scored on a single to right field by Alyssa Compton.

"That was a great hit by Alyssa. She hit that ball in the right direction, that's all we wanted her to do," said Northwood coach Blair Ota.

Nicole Thomas (12-4) allowed two unearned runs and scattered eight hits. She struck out five.

"We're so excited, and I'm so proud of my team," Nicole Thomas said. "They really did what they had to do to win this. We really focused on what we wanted and got it done."

"She did great and got stronger as the game went on," Ota said. "She had some tough luck early in the game."

Northwood (18-9-1) trailed, 2-1, going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sydney Saxton singled to lead off, eventually advanced to third on an error and scored on a single by Julia Northcutt. Northcutt was the Timberwolves' leading hitter going 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Colton (21-6) scored two unearned runs in the third inning collecting four hits and a cashing in on a key Northwood error to take a 2-0 lead.

Northwood came back in the fourth inning to cut the lead to one. Compton walked and scored on an RBI double by Kylee Lologo. The Timberwolves had runners on second and third with one out but starting pitcher Lauren Salazar worked out of trouble.

Saxton had three hits, Compton had two hits and a walk and Lologo two hits for Northwood, which had 11 hits.
