NEWPORT BEACH The girls match of the Dave Mohs Memorial All-Star event afforded Taylor Wheatley and her Orange Lutheran teammates one final opportunity on the court with each other in high school.

The Lancers (Wheatley, Kaitlyn Gibbons and Emily Blair) were on the North squad coached by coach Andrew Mabry and Dave Huber (Los Alamitos).

After a slow start, the North, behind Wheatley, rallied to defeat the South, 18-25, 25-23, 15-11, Friday night at Newport Harbor HS. This is the 37th edition of the all-star games.

Wheatley (nine kills) was selected MVP.

“As soon as I found out I would have the opportunity to play with my high school teammates again, I was so excited, I was looking forward to it all week,” Wheatley said.

The match was played in the best two-of-three format, but the third set would be play regardless.

After winning the first set, the South led for the majority of the second. Tia Scambray (Dana Hills) gave the South a 23-19 lead late in the second set.

However, the North wouldn’t go quietly, scoring the final six points, the final coming on a kill from Kylee Wolfe (Whittier Christian) to even the match at 1-1.

The North jumped out to an early lead in the third set and never relinquished it, closing the match on a kill from Wheatley.

“It is quite an honor and really humbling because there are so many great athletes on the court,” she said. “It is great to play against some of the best players, probably in the country and it was really fun.

“We were having fun, but we definitely wanted to win because we’re all competitive.”

Gibbons added five kills for the North.

Scambray would have been an easy MVP selection for the South. The Washington-bound outside hitter led the South with 10 kills.

Sami Krakower (Mater Dei) had four kills.

Dan O’Dell (Mater Dei) and Steve Astor (Corona del Mar) were the coaches of the South squad.

In the boys match

The North rallied after losing the opening set to defeat the South, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11.

Newport Harbor’s Nic Sargeant was the MVP. His teammate Clay Carr led the North with nine kills. Orange Lutheran’s Mac Egan and Jon Predney, had five and four kills, respectively for the North.

Lucas LaMont (Laguna Hills) led the South with five kills. Jack Wyett (Laguna Beach), Taylor McCluskey (Tesoro) and Joey Martino (Corona del Mar) had four apiece.
