NEWPORT BEACH – Glendora scored once in the third inning and twice in the sixth to beat Sage Hill, 3-2, and snap the team’s 40-game unbeaten streak in an Anaheim Lions Tournament game Tuesday at Sage Hill High.

“You never want to lose,” Sage Hill coach Dominic Campeau said, “but like I told the boys, my fear was that we’re going to lose one day where somehow we don’t show up. Sometime you have low energy sometimes, but they battled the whole time.”

Sage Hill’s win streak stretched back to March 1, 2016, and included a 32-game winning streak and CIF-SS Division title. The Lightning were 39-0-1 over the streak.

“You never want it to end, but I think the timing is good now,” Campeau said. “We got that out of the way right before we go in league.”

Sage Hill (12-1-1) also lost out on its shot at the Anaheim Lions Tournament title game.

Glendora (13-4) was extremely patient at the plate and made Sage Hill starter Brett Super throw a lot of pitches through 5 2/3 innings of work.

“Usually he blows it by people,” Campeau said. “His curveball is so deceiving, and those guys would just pick up his curveball. Their approach at the plate is phenomenal.”

The Tartans grabbed the lead in the third inning as they capitalized on a lead-off walk by Robert Draper. Draper got around to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Hayden Pearce.

Wyatt Regis kept Sage Hill down on the mound with six strikeouts, but errors put the Lightning on the board in the sixth.

Edward Pelc reached on a fielder’s choice and scored from first on a miscued double play. Super was the batter and made his way to third. Super then scored on a squeeze bunt by Michael Helton to take the lead, 2-1.

Errors got Sage Hill going and took them down in the bottom of the sixth. Brock Welte got to first on error, moved to third on a bunt and a single and he scored on an error to tie, 2-2.

Scott Ellis scored the winning run after his single, two stolen bases and a RBI single from Bryce Wooldridge.

Wooldridge picked up the win in relief, and Super took the loss. Super allowed six hits, walked four and struck out six.
