Recently departed Newport Harbor boys water polo coach Robert Lynn has been hired as the boys and girls water polo coach at Chadwick, and he will also teach and assist as a swim coach at the private school in Palos Verdes, Dolphins athletic director Tom Goodspeed said Tuesday.

Goodspeed said Lynn started his post Tuesday and was hired Monday, the same day Newport Harbor announced that Marco Palazzo, a lower-level coach on Lynn’s staff at Newport Harbor, would take over the Sailors’ program on an interim basis.

Lynn was fired earlier in the summer by the Newport Harbor feeder club and resigned at the school earlier this month. The Olympian guided the Sailors’ boys water polo program for three seasons, leading the squad to the CIF Division 1 semifinals twice and three straight Sunset League titles.

Goodspeed said Chadwick looked into the circumstances of Lynn’s departure from Newport Beach Water Polo Club and Newport Harbor but wasn’t deterred in hiring the former U.S. Olympic men’s assistant coach.

The Newport Beach club called Lynn’s departure a personnel move while Newport Harbor and Lynn haven’t commented.

“We’re excited to have him aboard,” Goodspeed said of Lynn.

At Chadwick, Lynn replaces former UCLA goalie Will Didinger, who departed after six seasons for a job with the L.A. County lifeguards, Goodspeed said. Chadwick is a rebuilding program that competes in the Division 4 Prep League with traditionally strong Pasadena Poly and newcomer Brentwood. Chadwick has a six-lane, on-campus pool.
