NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor running back Tala Teaupa could not be stopped.

The senior rushed the ball 25 times for 272 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Sailors to 42-21 victory over Troy in the first round of the Southwest Division playoffs Friday night at Newport Harbor High.

Sailors coach Jeff Brinkley praised his offensive line for the work they did upfront for Teaupa.

“Our offensive line played great tonight,” he said. “This was one of the most dominant performances I’ve seen upfront in a couple of years.”

The Sailors will be on the road next week for a second-round game against Villa Park.

After trailing 14-0 late into the first, Newport Harbor scored 42 points in a row.

The scoring streak began at with a Riley Gaddis 4-yard TD run with 20 seconds left in the first, and ended when Warriors’ Diego Iturburo scored on a 12-yard TD run at the 9:25 mark of the fourth.

Brinkley said that he knew it would take a couple of possessions to get used to the offense that Troy runs, which features a lot of misdirection running plays.

“We got off to a slow start (defensively), but I expected that,” he said. “They do a lot of different things with their offense.”

Troy opened the scoring in the first half with a 2-yard run from Dallas Parent at the 6:16 mark of the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Newport Harbor lost a fumble at their 25. Troy capitalized on the Sailors mistake with a 3-yard run from Parent.

That’s when Teaupa took over.

After another short TD run from Gaddis, Teaupa took in two. one from 13 yards in the second quarter and the other from 14 in the third.

“He ran the ball great again tonight,” Brinkley said of Teaupa. “Our offensive line was able to get a (strong) push on their defense.”
