Mater Dei’s Katie Lou Samuelson received another prestigious national award this morning, being named Gatorade’s national player of the year for girls basketball.

Samuelson received the award in a surprise announcement during an assembly at the school.

The 6-foot-3 senior, who has signed with UConn, has led the Monarchs to a 30-2 record and a berth in the Open Division final of the CIF Southern California Regionals.

She is averaging 29.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. She also has a 4.2 GPA.

Mater Dei has an overall record of 87-7 in her three seasons on the team.

Samuelson joins Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (2011) as the only Mater Dei girls basketball players to receive Gatorade’s national honor.

Samuelson has also been named the Naismith and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association national player of the year.
