OCVarsity’s preview of Friday’s CIF-SS football playoff game.

DIVISION 3

SEMIFINALS

Los Alamitos (9-3) vs. La Mirada (10-2)

Where, when: Veterans Stadium, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The Griffins are back in the semifinals for the first time since 2004 and have played their way to the cusp of a CIF championship game behind an opportunistic defense. In wins over Villa Park and Palos Verdes, Los Al’s defense has forced a total of nine turnovers and its held a pair of skilled offenses to a combined 21 points. Top-seeded La Mirada comes into Friday night’s matchup on a nine-game winning streak, and the Matadores are riding high after overcoming a 21-point deficit in last week’s 32-31 second round win over La Serna. La Mirada senior quarterback Tristan Meyer has been incredibly efficient with the football, completing nearly 70-percent of his passes on the season and tossing 34 touchdowns to just one interception. In a matchup of equals, the offense that protects the football and executes best will see itself playing next week for a CIF title.
