Rewind to May 2012, and you’d find Glen Miles leading San Clemente to an appearance in the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division Championship game.

Shortly after, Miles left the Tritons to become head coach at St. Margaret’s.

“It was a family decision,” Miles said about the move. “St. Margaret’s was a very good place for my family and I. It’s private and has solid academics and athletics.”

Fast forward to today. After a successful first season at St. Margaret’s, in which the Tartans won section and county championships, Miles has been selected the Register’s boys lacrosse coach for 2013.

“I’m extremely honored,” Miles said of the award. “There’s been a lot of coaching success in Orange County. (It feels good to be) on a list with the likes of Jon Fox (Foothill) and GW Mix (Corona del Mar).”

St. Margaret’s was seeded third in the South Division playoffs and beat Foothill and Corona del Mar, who were seeded first and second, respectively.

After winning the Southern Section championship against Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood, Miles acknowledged he had no clue his first season as Tartans coach would turn out the way it did.

Miles’ first campaign took a little while to get off and running. St. Margaret’s started 2-4 while still adapting to Miles’ schemes.

“We started slow,” Tartans junior Hunter Edington said. “The system took a while to get used to. But coach (Miles) kept telling us we were very good. He told us, ‘See, I told you so,’ when we started winning.”

The encouragement led to St. Margaret’s finishing the season with 19 consecutive wins.

Miles said the most rewarding part of his season was when he could tell his players finally started to buy in to his system.

“The moment they believed us,” Miles said. “That’s when you could see them start playing up to their capability.”

It’s interesting that Miles and the Register’s player of the year, Ryan Harnisch, weren’t at St. Margret’s a year ago.

“There’s no doubt they (the accomplishments) are related,” Miles said. “Ryan Harnisch’s success was an advantage, and every coach’s success is related to its players.”

With both slated to return to the Tartans next season, there might be a lot more success for the pair in the future.
