Two months after winning the CIF-SS Division 1 championship, Mater Dei named Jessica Foley the school’s newest head softball coach on Wednesday afternoon.

Foley was an assistant coach at Mater Dei this past season, helping lead the Monarchs to the program’s first CIF title since 1998 alongside previous coach, Tia Meza, who stepped down from her post after taking on the role of athletic director at the school.

“Everyone here at Mater Dei is excited about Jessica Foley taking over as the head coach of the Mater Dei softball team,” Meza said in a statement. “Jessica has a passion for the game and a wealth of knowledge that the players can benefit from. We look forward to a bright future and continued success with her at the helm.”

Prior to coaching at Mater Dei this past season, Foley served as an assistant at El Modena High for the previous nine years. She graduated from El Modena in 2005 and earned Century League MVP honors and first team All-County recognition as a senior.

While she also was an assistant on El Modena’s 2008 championship-winning squad, this will be Foley’s first head coaching job.

“I am extremely blessed to have the opportunity to continue coaching at Mater Dei this year,” she said in a statement. “Taking over this program is a huge honor and I will continue to uphold the traditions of the school, both on and off the field.”
